Martin Seligman, a pioneer in positive psychology, introduced the concept of flourishing as a holistic approach to well-being. His PERMA model (Positive emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishments) form the foundation of flourishing, Inspired and based on his work, this series seeks to examine the parallel in how both seek to explore human experience beyond surface-level perceptions. Abstract art, like flourishing, encourages us to engage deeply with our emotions, to find meaning in non-literal representations, and challenge conventional perspectives. Both concepts invite one to look beyond the obvious and find richness in the complex tapestry of human existence. The boxes are an attempt to find these parallels.

Deborah creates highly finished, abstract work using beeswax , alcohol inks and other materials; her work is exploratory, tactile, and playful. Inspired by traditional Japanese forms, materials, and craftsmanship, as well as through her own awareness of twentieth-century art practice, she seeks to revisit and re-imagine the art object, to somehow “make it new.””
